Windows 7, with Windows Live Essentials loaded, has almost everything you need to do your things if you are a casual user. Here I list 10 very small (micro) free applications that will make things easier for you.
1. Connectify – If you use a laptop which has a wifi adapter, this is a must have application. Hidden deep inside, Windows 7 has the ability to turn your system into a wifi hotspot. However this is not a documented feature and requires you to use the command prompt to use it. Connectify makes this extremely easy to use the feature and can be used by anyone who can use windows barely.
2. Net Speed Monitor – This micro sized application is a network interface monitor. It also has some other useful features like Connection Tables, Daily and Monthly usage report and multi-language support.
3. CCleaner – This is one of those products that has made a company if you know what I mean. Its a cleanup tool and should definitely be there in your kitty since the one which comes with Windows is no where as powerful as this.
4. ImgBurn – Made by the same people who made DVD Decrypter, this is a micro sized CD/DVD burning utility. Its free, unbloated and does what its meant to without a hitch. The interface is very similar to DVD Decrypter.
5. Defraggler – Ever wondered if you could defrag just one file or a particular folder instead of a whole drive because you are low on time. This is just the tool for you. This excellent tool lets you do just this and many more things you find in a mega sized paid alternative.
6. Speccy – This advanced system information tool is in active development and very small. This tools lets you monitor different temperatures, SMART status, and many more things.
7. µTorrent – The world’s most famous torrent client, this one has a size of about 300 kb. In today’s age, you can’t get something as awesome as this at a smaller size. Its a very advanced piece of torrent client and the most light-weight as well.
8. Rainmeter – Rainmeter is a Windows customization tool. At 3mb its one of the smallest customization tool. However it only provides the plumbing for customization as it comes with 2 preloaded skins. You need to download the skins separately from different websites. The best part is that this is extremely customizable although initially it might seem a little daunting. Maybe I'll write a tutorial for this later.
9. Recuva – This tiny undelete tool is also from piriform. Does just the thing it says. Recovers accidentally deleted files. This tool can save a lot of hassle if you accidentally delete some files from your hard drive or any other memory device.
10. 7-Zip – This is a free archiver which is about 1mb in size. It can compress and decompress almost all of the popular formats.
